New Guidance for Caring for Pregnant Individuals with Factor VII and Factor XI Deficiency

August 19, 2026

Caring for women with ultra-rare bleeding disorders during pregnancy and childbirth presents unique challenges for both patients and healthcare providers. Because these conditions are uncommon and bleeding risk can vary significantly from person to person, individualized care and close coordination among hematology, obstetrics, and other specialists are essential.

Recognizing the need for practical guidance, the Clinical Care Subcommittee of the WGBD® Learning Action Network (LAN) formed a multidisciplinary workgroup to develop recommendations for clinicians caring for pregnant individuals with ultra-rare bleeding disorders. The first resources in this series focus on Factor VII deficiency and Factor XI deficiency. The recommendations guide pregnancy and delivery planning, emphasizing the importance of considering an individual’s bleeding history and planned hemostatic management when assessing bleeding risk.
