Announcing Six NEW ASH Clinical Practice Guidelines on VTE

 

 

 

 

 

 

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a highly prevalent and far-reaching public health problem that, despite effective new options for prevention and treatment, remains a threat unappreciated by the general public, causing up to 100,000 deaths annually in the United States alone.

ASH has long recognized the need for a comprehensive set of guidelines on the treatment of VTE to help the medical community better prevent and treat this serious condition. Through a partnership with McMaster University GRADE Centre, ASH brought together more than 100 experts including hematologists, other clinicians, guideline development specialists, and patient representatives to develop over 250 recommendations for prevention and treatment.

The first six chapters of the ASH Clinical Practice Guidelines on VTE have been published in the Society’s peer-reviewed journal Blood Advances. Four more chapters are in development.

The 10 evidence-based clinical guidelines chapters cover VTE through several lenses:

• Prophylaxis for medical patients
• Diagnosis
• Anticoagulation therapy
• Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
• Pregnancy
• Pediatrics 
• Treatment (anticipated in 2019)
• Cancer (anticipated in 2019)
• Thrombophilia (anticipated in 2019)
• Prophylaxis for surgical patients (anticipated in 2019)
