Webinar – Perinatal Stroke: Risk Factors and Present and Potential Future Management
Please join FWGBD for a Webinar, Perinatal Stroke: Risk Factors and Present and Potential Future Management, on Wednesday, November 20th at 12:00 PM ET (11:00 AM CT/10:00 AM MT/9:00 AM PT).
Perinatal stroke affects one in every 4,000 births each year, making it about as common as stroke in the young adult. The multifactorial etiology includes maternal systemic disorders of pregnancy, difficult labor and delivery, and parental thrombophilia. During this webinar, we are joined by Eric Grabowski, MD, SCD, Co-Director, Pediatric Stroke Services in the Pediatric Stroke and Cerebrovascular Program at Mass General for Children, and pediatric neurologist, Danielle Pier, MD. Founded in 2002, the program has evaluated and managed nearly 150 perinatal ischemic strokes (PAS) since its inception. This webinar will describe our experience with PAS, provide insight into risk factors, and suggest possible present and future therapeutic interventions. Counseling of parents with regard to PAS should include provision of understanding of possible causes, emotional support, annual follow-up of an affected child, management of treatable prothrombotic risk factors found in the child (e.g., elevations in lipoprotein (a)), and counselling of parents with regard to subsequent pregnancies.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe perinatal ischemic stroke (PAS), including the risk factors.
- Discuss the present and future therapeutic interventions for PAS.
- Explain the importance of counseling parents of an affected child regarding the treatment and management of care for the child and future pregnancies.
