MAC Member Dr. Jim Bussel Comments on Extremely Rare Cases of ITP in COVID-19 Vaccination Recipients

February 10, 2021

In a recent New York Times article, Dr. Jim Bussel, MD, Professor Emeritus at Weill Cornell Medicine and FWGBD Medical Advisory Committee Member, was asked to comment on the rare incidence of patients who received the COVID-19 vaccine and later developed immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Though a linkage is not confirmed and the incidents are extremely rare, Dr. Bussel thinks it is possible there is an association, possibly related to an underlying trait. By sharing information about these rare cases, providers can identify the best therapies for treatment and improve patient care.
