HTRS | FWGBD Sickle Cell Disease Research Roundtable

March 13, 2025

As part of the HTRS 2025 Scientific Symposium, sickle cell disease (SCD) experts from the HTRS and FWGBD networks brought together a multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals, researchers, and program leaders to address an often-overlooked area in sickle cell disease (SCD): fertility and sexual health. The Roundtable created a dedicated space for open dialogue among hematologists, OB-GYNs, thrombosis specialists, and experts in reproductive health and family planning.

Together, participants explored the physiological links between SCD, thrombosis, and fertility; the impact of new curative therapies; and the complex reproductive health challenges patients with SCD face—from preconception through postpartum care. The Roundtable also addressed common sexual health concerns and the need for better communication and support between patients and providers.

This event marked an important step toward improving the quality of life for people with SCD by centering fertility and sexual health as vital components of whole-person care. Watch the recording of the Roundtable here, or view directly below.
